With technology taking a front row seat in cutting machines that produce some of the most amazing designs on our craft projects, it's easy to overlook the humble 'punch' lurking at the back of the drawer gathering dust. Hi, it's Melinda with you today and I'm going to share a fun technique using a simple hand held flower punch to create an ombre centrepiece for my page.
Firstly, I have to admit that I'm a sucker for grey so as soon as I spied this patterned paper from the new Spicy Social Soup collection I new it was going to be one of the first pieces I used. Then it was a matter of putting together a range of subtle hues to compliment the background colour.
To create the rows of punched flowers I always work with a little production line on my desk as it can be quite time consuming punching, folding, glueing and sticking each individual flower. So, firstly I punched out a whole bunch of flowers in different colours, patterns etc.
Each flower has to be folded gently so the petals are raised slightly on the page. I then add a small dob of glue to each one as I go along the row. Now, I have trialled numerous adhesives and have found the best option for this technique is Tombow Mono Multi Liquid Glue as it seems to dry the fastest which is a necessity.
Each flower is adhered in place using a pair of tweezers and a ruler, however as the paper had lines printed into the pattern I was able to use these as a guide instead of a ruler. I always try to have each flower facing the same direction to keep a uniform feel to the overall look of the design.
To finish the layout I kept the embellishing to a minimum using neutral tones in white and grey with only a hint of colour in the wooden pieces as I really wanted the photo and flowers to remain the focal point of the page.
