Hi All! Jill here today. Happy Friday!
Today, let's talk wood. Wood, wood, wood - I love all things wood. I'm totally inspired by all the wood signs, wood projects, wood shapes and DIY wood tutorials you see on Pinterest and blogs. If you missed it last week, Kimber showed you our latest Mix the Media release. You can see it HERE. In the next couple weeks, we'll bring you some of our own DIY projects using the new wood pieces. If you love the FARMHOUSE look, you'll love how some of these pieces can fit in your house! Many of them I used in my home!
Here's a peek at some of our upcoming DIY project tutorials...
Below, check out a couple of close-ups of some simple projects...
This beautiful sign using our Offset Natural Flats was very simple to make. If you own a die cutting machine, you can cut your own stencils. I make stencils with my Silhouette - either paper ones or vinyl. I will note that vinyl works better in the case of our MM wood - it's a bit distressed so the surface is uneven. The vinyl attaches to the wood and helps build a barrier in between the wood and the stencil so it doesn't bleed as much. The word "beautiful' was purchased from the Silhouette store. In the next couple weeks, we'll be giving you some freebie stencils (cut files or PDFs) for you to use!
Another simple piece using another Offset Flat, but this time in our "rustic" stain. I don't know what it is about cows right now, but I see them as "cool" and almost "chic". This teal one is a fun color...I love how he "pops" from the wood. This too was done using a stencil that was cut on my Silhouette Cameo. This one I did with paper. I used a stencil adhesive to adhere to the wood and unfortunately a little bit of glue was left on the wood. You can sand some of that off if it bothers you too much. I've tried many different ways to do these signs - trying to figure out what's best and easiest.
Below is one of my favorite pieces. The wood is one of our Mix the Media Flats in our "rustic" stain. I had purchased the tiny wood slices from a home store but you can find them on Etsy and many other places. In order to make this work, I cut out a deer head from cardstock using my Silhouette yet again. I centered the deer head and then started laying them out. Once I got close to being done, I went ahead and removed the die cut leaving the wood on wood. Each wood slice was glued down using Liquid Nails.
Below is a fun piece using a couple different pieces of our Mix the Media program - a Whitewashed Wood Flat plus the Natural USA shape. I painted the USA an aqua color so it would stick out on the white background. The heart was cut with my Silhouette however you could easily punch a heart from a piece of cardstock and get the same stencil. The heart was painted red and then the Wordfetti Words "happiness" and "is" were added, plus a wood veneer heart. I sanded the edge of the USA a bit to give it a more distressed look.
This JOY piece is one of the latest pieces we worked on. It's painted on the large 18x24 Large Wood Flats in our "rustic" stain. The "J" and the "Y" were cut using a cut file we developed (and we'll share it in the next couple weeks) just for this piece. The letters were outlined with a white paint marker (using the die cut cardstock as a stencil) and then painted and filled in with regular white acrylic paint (Jillibean has some - our Happy Hues :)). The 10" wreath was adhered with a glue gun. I'm all about cotton wreaths right now!
You can see a couple pieces below that I pieced together on a shelving unit in our living room. Again - my cow obsession shows here. I purchased the galvanized cow from Etsy - you can find just about any shape on there. The star piece was made by our DT member Jenifer Harkin using vintage springs. Easy peasy project that just requires the spring and glue. The "crazy blessed" wood piece is made using our Mix the Media original wood planks. I have been a fan of this saying for quite some time...crazy blessed. My girls make me feel like I'm blessed - crazy blessed. I believe this saying was also purchased in the Silhouette store.
String art... oh string art how I love thee. Below is one of our String Art kits that was sold through some of the major chains. In the next couple of weeks we'll show you how to do your own sentiment in string art. Believe it or not, it's pretty easy. Loud, but easy.
The sign below uses our Wood Framed Burlap pieces. DT member Kristine Davidson completed this project using a stencil and a Sharpie. Sharpies work well on burlap - did you know that? And it's like coloring. :)
This is a wall in our hallway by the kitchen. I have a love of "Y"s because of our last name - Yegerlehner. You'll see them all over our house. And there's another "crazy blessed" sign. This one was purchased from Etsy years ago. The piece I want to point out is the Wood Framed Chalkboard. DT member Patty Folchert is great with a chalk marker! There's a technique we will share with you in the next couple weeks but I'm pretty sure Patty just free-handed this. Love the heart shaped verse! Oh, and there's my birthday girl in the black frame - today is her 13th birthday!
Last but not least is another one of our USA planks but this time I used spray paint. I've learned that spray paint is easy but it doesn't always work the best or show up the best. In this case it works because the "rustic" stain is shown through as the words (Hey y'all) with the "rustic" stain showing through and the white are a good contrast to the stain. Once again, I cut out a vinyl stencil using my Silhouette Cameo. This time I used the mask part (the insides) though and then just spray painted over top of it.
I sure hope you will join us in the next couple of weeks for more great projects and tutorials! We've got some great stuff to share!
Let us know if you have questions! Our wood pieces can be found at stores across the US - JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby and Walmart all carry various pieces. We will be adding the larger wood flats to our retail store soon as well.
Have a great weekend everyone!
These are just great, I love that teal cow too!
